Human sexuality is a set of individual expressions and behaviors that are influenced by multiple factors. Oral sex is a frequent sexual practice among young people, and it carries little-known risks for sexually transmitted infections. Objective: This article aims to study the relation between knowledge about use of methods for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) prevention and practice of safe oral sex by young university students of health field. Methodology: This study has a cross-sectional design. The collection was carried out at Departamento de Ciências da Vida at the Universidade do Estado da Bahia. The participants were invited to fill in an anonymous and self- explanatory questionnaire related to practical issues and knowledge about STIs. Results: The sample consisted of 226 students from nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, medicine, and nutrition. Regarding of the sexual practices of the participants, 157 (69.8%) practice oral sex, however, 70.6% (120) never used condoms at least once in their lives and only 7.8% (13 students) used condoms regularly. We found no correlations between knowledge about STI transmission and regular condom use in oral sex. Conclusion: The reduced use of condoms in oral practice is an important risk factor for STI transmission. Just have knowledge about STIs is not the only factor related to condom use in oral sex. Since there are few articles on this topic, this study expands the debate about safe oral sex in the young university population.
