SATISFACTION AND EXPECTATIONS OF PRE-OPERATED TRANSGENDER PATIENTS COMPARED TO POST-OPERATED ONES REGARDING SEXUAL REASSIGNMENT SURGERY

Introduction: Historically considered a mental disorder and declassified by the WHO in 2019, transgenderism encompasses 2% of Brazilian adults. Sex reassignment involves hormonal therapy and surgery, the latter of which can result in impactful complications on quality of life. Support and empathy from healthcare professionals influence patient satisfaction. Methodology: Systematic literature review on satisfaction and expectations of sex reassignment surgery in transgender patients, comparing pre- and post-operative cases. The research involved 52 articles from the MEDLINE, LILACS, and CAPES databases, with 17 studies from the last five years selected, excluding systematic reviews, integrative reviews, and meta-analyses. Results and discussion: The pathologization of transgenderism limits healthcare access for transgender individuals. Literature on post-surgical expectations is scarce, especially for trans women. Pursuit of sex reassignment relates to the humanization of the body and social gender recognition. Inappropriate terms, such as "transsexualism," hinder thematic discussion, highlighting the crucial need for a welcoming approach to this population in healthcare services. Conclusion: The importance of surgery for the well-being of transgender individuals is acknowledged, despite disagreements on its necessity in improving quality of life. Emphasis is placed on post-operative follow-up focusing on social, emotional, and familial issues, in addition to technical or aesthetic aspects.
