Comparing the painting L´Origine du mond , by the French artist Gustave Courbet, and a specific excerpt from the novel Margens das lembranças , by the Brazilian writer - born in the State of Pernambuco - Hermilo Borba Filho, this essay focuses on a certain gazing, an archetypically masculine gazing, at the female genitals, in two different historic and geographic contexts.
