The paper explores the meanings of fixed and casual partnerships within the anal sex without condoms interface (ASWP), an important form of HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM). It analyzes 38 interviews with MSM living in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR). In the behavioral surveys, the notion of fixed partnership presupposes monogamy and sexual exclusivity, while that of occasional suggests a fortuitous, momentary bond. The results show that trust in one's partner is an important descriptor and justification for SASP scenes. It emerges in romantic partnerships (dating, marriage, stable union), but is also present among people with whom one has sex regularly, referred to as acquaintances, collapsing, in a way, the categories of the behavioral surveys.
