SEXUALITY IN THE TRANSITION TO PARENTHOOD

The transition to parenthood not only establishes maternal and paternal roles, but also brings changes to the couple's sexual and marital dynamics. The aim of this study was to understand how sexuality is experienced in the transition to parenthood, and a narrative literature review was conducted using national and international databases. The findings of the review showed that sexuality in the transition to parenthood is experienced through physical changes, self-image shifts, potential mental health issues, and new ways of approaching and understanding life. Furthermore, couples need to reinvent intimacy and sexual practices, engaging in constructive communication and mutual understanding. Additionally, marital satisfaction and sexual health may be influenced by factors external to the family, such as social norms, support networks, and adjustments in career and work schedules. In view of the results of this review, we recommend interventions with couples that can foster family relationships with affection, pleasure and reciprocity in the transition to parenthood.
