SELF-PERCEPTION OF THE USE OF ANABOLIC-ANDROGENIC STEROIDS ON FEMALE SEXUAL CHARACTERISTICS

Introduction: The use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) has increased considerably in the world population. In Brazil, the number of users can be between 2.1 to 31.6%, depending on the region of the country. Their side effects in women can lead to genital alterations such as clitoral hypertrophy, changes in menstrual cycle, in voice, acne and hair loss. Research problem: In view of this, this study answered the following research question: What are the impacts of use of AAS on female secondary sexual characteristics? Hypothesis: it was hypothesized that the use of AAS generates changes in female sexual characteristics. Objective: the aim of the stud was to evaluate the impact of use of AAS on female sexual characteristics. Material and methods: This is a case-control study, with a sample composed of 60 woman (18-45 years old). Participants answered a questionnaire through the Google Forms platform about the perception of their female sexual characteristics. Results: the findings of this study demonstrated that AAS use induced to clitoral hypertrophy, reduction of the labia minora and breasts, besides changes in vocal timbre. Conclusion: the results corroborate the initial hypothesis suggesting greater clinical attention to the effects of these substances on the female body.
