Abstract

Asexuality is defined as the sexual orientation of individuals who do not feel sexual attraction towards another person, and which can have negative psychological effects. The aim of this study was to identify the psychological dilemmas and effects experienced by asexuals who have been involved in romantic relationships with sexual partners. This is a mixed study conducted with Brazilian asexuals from a virtual community. It was observed that of the 40 asexual participants, 28 reported a history of romantic involvement with sexual partners, of which 14 suffered sexual coercion by their partner and nine gave in to pressure, having sexual relations against their will. Female participants were 0.17 times more likely to suffer sexual coercion than male participants. The potential psychological vulnerability of asexuals and the inseparability of love and sex were identified, manifested by sex as a form of legitimization/proof of the feeling of love. Thus, it was found that the ideals of romantic love and the inseparability of love/sex harm the physical and psychological health of asexuals and compromise the quality of romantic relationships.
