Sexual health has been considered as one of the parameters to evaluate the quality of life. Sexual satisfaction represents one important aspect for its acquisition. Nevertheless, it is not clear what it means. This investigation has explored through a systematic review of the literature 487 articles on the subject showing how they define sexual satisfaction, its measures, as well its theoretical models developed for its comprehension. This review has shown that this concept varies according the approach used. The majority of these studies have a limited perspective of sexual satisfaction, dealing most of the time with its functionality, leaving aside its subjective components, such as emotional and affective ones. Few theoretical models provide alternatives that considered both emotional and affective elements of sexual satisfaction as well as the physical pleasure. It is suggested here that is needed a new instrument to measure sexual satisfaction in Brazil that is able to offer a more integrate perspective.
