ln an extensive bibliographic search, we tried to make the review of the sexual side effects of anti-depressive medication as complete as possible. Although the amount of published studies is large, we admit there is a considerable shortage, in as much as the majority of investigations are condensed in presenting isolated cases or small series. A considerable amount of studies are open label, and a few are double blind, randomized, placebo- controlled. We did a study of the sexual function and its involvement with the use of anti-depressive medication, the involved physiopathology, and the procedure that attempts to solve the problem as best as possible. Also some consideration was given to the several antidotes employed in the treatment, and other therapeutic alternatives. We concluded that despite innumerable published studies, more research is needed with double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials and with rigorous rating scales that look for the depressive parameters and the sexual function disturbance related to the use of anti-depressive medication.
