Abstract

The gender affirming process has been the subject of several discussions, but the same space to debate about it from the perspective of the transexual person is not observed. In this context, the present study sought to identify the socio-emotional aspects involved in the gender affirming process through a case study. The data collection and analysis of data provided the elaboration of the following units of meaning: The discovery of gender identity; The suffering; Transphobia; Motivation for the transsexualizing process; Post-surgery and the future. The gender affirming process must be seen as a right of the transexual population and guaranteed by the Unified Health System. In addition, transexuals who undergo this procedure increase their self-esteem, in addition to decreasing the psychological distress that often causes serious mental disorders and, in extreme cases, suicide.
