HEALTH AND SEXUALITY EDUCATION FOR ADULTS WITH AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDER

AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

The objective of this study was to map the scientific evidence on health and sexuality education for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder using the integrative literature review method. Searches were carried out in the following databases: Scientific Electronic Library (SCIELO), National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS) and Virtual Health Library (BVS). The eleven publications included and analyzed were published between 2015 and 2023. The selected studies on the subject are national and international in scope, with quantitative and qualitative approaches, case studies and thematic analyses of interviews. The objects of the studies bring the challenges faced by individuals with ASD in the sexual sphere, resulting in a considerable gap throughout life. They present the problem of the lack of sexuality education inside and outside the home, together with the discomfort of parents and caregivers regarding the sexuality of autistic individuals, contributing to desexualization and lack of understanding about autistic sexual behaviors, leading to a series of sexual vulnerabilities, including victimization, increased risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection and inappropriate sexual behaviors. Based on this, it is concluded that sexuality education for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder continues to represent a significant barrier that requires a more comprehensive approach. The lack of attention dedicated to this field of study is evident in both national and international literature, which highlights a considerable gap to be explored in future studies. The complexity of the sexual and relational needs of these individuals requires a deeper understanding and a more inclusive approach in the formulation of public policies and educational programs.
