Abstract

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN) are the main eating disorders (EDs), marked by multifactorial disturbances in eating behavior that can lead to biological, psychological and social harms. Sexuality appears to be an important predictor of the outcome of treatment for these disorders and sexual impairment may be one of the consequences or comorbidities of EDs. Aim: To investigate the connection between sexual behavior and the expression of EDs in cisgender women diagnosed with AN and BN. Method: This is an integrative review of the literature published in the PUBMED database from January 2018 to December 2022. Results: After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, nine articles were analyzed, their results were presented in charts and discussed descriptively. Most studies found associations  between sexuality and EDs. Negative correlations were found between AN and desire, satisfaction, and sexual frequency, as well as positive correlations between BN and risky sexual behavior. Difficulty in self-image and problems in interpersonal relationships appear to be common in women diagnosed with EDs in general. Conclusion: Associations between sexual function and dietary issues are common among patients with AN and BN, denoting the importance of investigating dietary and sexual aspects among health professionals responsible for monitoring people with the diagnosis.
