SEX, GENDER, AND GENDER IDENTITY
HEALTH PROFESSIONALS’ KNOWLEDGE AND SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS IN THE CARE OF TRANSGENDER AND TRAVESTI INDIVIDUALS IN PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALIZATION

Psychiatric hospitalizations of transgender and transvestite individuals continue to operate in an ambiguous — perhaps even fractured — terrain. Care is claimed, but what is practiced is exclusion; the discourse of integrality falls short when confronted with what deviates from the norm. Still today, within walls that promise welcome, what reverberates is repetition: gazes that classify before listening, protocols unsure where to file a name that doesn't conform. In this study — conducted with 15 professionals from a Brazilian public hospital — the aim was not to judge, but to listen. And what emerged was noise. The discourses, gathered and analyzed using the Collective Subject Discourse method, do not lie: between normative advances and inertial practices, what surfaces is tension — between what is already known and what is still denied. Identity is not a concept; it is presence. And when that presence is disavowed, care itself cannot remain unscathed. What is missing goes beyond training. We must unlearn the gesture of exclusion — even when it disguises itself as technique.
