This study evaluated the prevalence of beliefs and superstitions related to female orgasm in patients from Pernambuco, Brazil. 166 individuals responded a questionnaire which examined the sociodemographic characteristics, beliefs and superstitions related to orgasm. Were mostly female, originating from Recife, well-educated, married and catholic. On average 49% of patients did not know how to answer the questions or opted for superstition response. The most prevalent superstition was related to intensity of orgasm, where 66.2% of patients believed that: “With more prolonged foreplay orgasms are more intense”; and the issue of greatest doubt was: “There are two different types of orgasms: vaginal and clitoral” (26%). We conclude that there is a high prevalence of beliefs in this population indicates that educational interventions related to sexuality should be proposed.
