GENDER OF IDENTITY DISTURB AND GENITAL SURGICAL RECONSTRUCTION

This work was developed by an interdisciplinary team of professionals in a Sexology outpatient clinic, for social security patients. This Project is geared to patients with Gender Identity Disturb. Due to the nature of proceedings the patients needed to be 21 years or older and sign a Term of Consent Stating, that understand the proceedings used in the treatment and agree with them. Patients are regularity followed, for two years; by the multidisciplinary equip, in accordance with Medicine Federal Counsel (Resolution nr. 1482 from 1997), which covers genital surgical reconstruction. Clinical visits are scheduled weekly or biweekly depending on the progress of treatment. The work comprises four different phases: the first are medical and psychological appraisals to reach a precise diagnosis. In the second phase, patients are submitted to Hormone Therapy, with quarterly laboratory check-up. The third phase is the preparation for surgery and the surgery itself. The fourth phase is the post surgery follow-up. Here the patients are so helped with clarification and incentive to self-discover of his new genitals. At this point he is he is psychological supported in his feelings concerning the adequacy to his new status. Finally he is oriented to the authorities to change his legal paper with the new gender.
