Abstract

Sexually explicit content depicts nudity or sexual acts intended to provoke arousal. Despite its widespread availability, the relationship between its consumption and personality traits, as proposed by Hans Eysenck’s “Big Three” theory (extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism), remains underexplored. This study aims to determine the prevalence of sexually explicit content consumption among students in a health sciences program at a university in southern Brazil and to assess their personality profiles. A cross-sectional, quantitative study was conducted with 214 medical students. Three instruments were applied: a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Sexually Explicit Content Consumption Questionnaire (Q-CCSE), and the Revised and Abbreviated Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQR-A). Inferential analysis employed Pearson’s chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Kruskal-Wallis test, with data processing performed using R software version 4.2.1. Results indicated a higher frequency of consumption among individuals with extraversion and neuroticism traits, suggesting that these characteristics may influence the pursuit of sexual stimuli and emotional regulation. Additionally, gender identity (p < 0.001) and sexual orientation (p = 0.008) were significantly associated with consumption. These findings highlight the complexity of the interaction between psychological individuality and sexually explicit content consumption, underscoring the need for further research on the implications of personality traits in this context.
