Prospective, exploratory, quantitative-qualitative study that aimed to characterize being a transvestite in a population of active sex workers, according to demographic and socioeconomic variables as well as the risk factors for sexually transmitted. Sample composed of 12 transvestites whose profession is prostitution. After analyzing and interpreting the collected data, the demographic and socioeconomic variables of the transvestite’s interviewed revealed that 41.6% of the participants had an age between 21 and 25 years of age, in relation to the monthly income, 33.3% earned more than R$3,001 in education, there was a 41.7% increase in high school and 33.3% in elementary school, when questioned about prostitution, 83.4% of the women interviewed thought they would quit prostitution, violence Was verified verbal, with 58.3%. The questions that permeate the use of alcohol and other drugs by transvestites revealed that 91.7% of the participants used or still use some type of drug, with marijuana / cigarette being the highest index with 50%. The qualitative data submitted to the BARDIN Content Analysis (2011), generated 9 categories. We consider that the research presented a vision about the world of transvestites, whose profession is prostitution, collaborating for a more respectful look at the option and the transformations carried out in her body as a transvestite.
