HEALTHY MASCULINITIES VS TOXIC MASCULINITIES

Abstract

This article consists in reflecting about the masculinity constructs, analyzing definitions, manifestations and types as well as possibilities to overcome the negative expressions’ effects that interfere on social relationships. Therefore, a qualitative study was develop based on a literature review which showed basic assumptions of gender construction and your expressions that are considered healthy and toxics. Such constructions are based on asymmetrical, unequal and hierarchical gender relationships that were already consolidated in patterns throughout history and which are stereotypes of being “manly” – one who acts with firmness, virility, honor, domination, power, aggressiveness and, at times, violence. It is a sexual practice defined by the indisputable aegis of partner’s superiority and control. Also, it made possible to problematize negative consequences of these expressions, showing possible paths in favor of gender equity.
